Dolmen at the Sun Trail in Yalta
The dolmen at the Sun Trail is one of Yalta’s most remarkable archaeological landmarks. Located near Gaspra, right by the famous tourist path, it is considered the largest dolmen in the city. The monument is notable for its massive cover slab and rough, monumental shape. Unlike Caucasian dolmens, this one appears less refined, yet its raw form gives it a distinctive character. Today, it is protected as a cultural heritage site of Crimea.
The Sun Trail, one of the most popular hiking routes in Yalta, preserves not only scenic views but also traces of ancient history. Near Gaspra, right along this trail, stand two dolmens. One of them is especially significant — it is considered the largest dolmen of Yalta.
The monument has survived with a massive cover slab that still impresses visitors with its scale. Unlike the more elegant Caucasian dolmens, this one looks rougher and heavier, but this monumental simplicity only adds to its authenticity and ancient charm.
According to the official historical version, dolmens belong to the Bronze Age. Some researchers suggest they served ritual or burial purposes. There are also local legends linking them to sacred energy and ancient ceremonies. However, the truth remains uncertain — we do not know for sure why these megaliths were built.
Today, the dolmen at the Sun Trail has the official status of a cultural heritage monument and is protected by the state. Yet, full-scale archaeological excavations have never been carried out here. A small information plaque is the only reminder that this ancient stone structure is part of Crimea’s centuries-old heritage.
